Sunn Jellie - Sail EP [Really Really Big Records]
Written by Aaron Gray on Wednesday, 13 August 2008
ImageUp next is a quaint little release that found its way into my inbox, from producer Sunn Jellie...This is the Sail EP, released on Ukrainian label Really Really Big Records(Or RRBR, henceforth, cause that's a bit of typing :P ). I have heard absolutely nothing with regards to the artist or label, but when I popped this one into the player, I found it nice and relaxing, so I want to share it with you guys! Read on past the break for samples, reviews, and the like.

Sail – Original Mix

We start off with a sweep and some light percussion, and find our way right into the groove, as a kick introduces itself. A bit of synthwork enters, building in volume until we crest into full motion. The drum parts are nice and full, backing up the very laid-back synthwork quite nicely, while providing a bit of contrast that keeps the energy going. Some new overtones come into range, acting as our interim melody, along with some darker sounding material, until we encounter the break. The melody is brought into full view; a nice, plucky bit that does indeed echo nautical excursions...Or sailing ;) . We pick right back up where we left off, as the melody variates a bit, as we casually exit the track.

Cassiopeia-Original Mix

This one begins in similar fashion-top heavy percussion, until a kick is swept right in. The kick also brings a higher energy drum part, it moves the track along. This rumbling bassline makes its entrance, as sweeps crest and fall above the track. Our bassline makes some tonal changes, which adds to the progression of the track. Some electronic noise makes its way in, to act as the higher pitch, spastic opposite of the bassline, creating contrast(good contrast, of course). Some of our filling elements depart, to fake the transition; a glance at the time says that we're only halfway through, so don't be fooled yet! It's the breakdown for the break. The break is lush, bringing forth some lovely synthwork, as well as a melody played out on the noise element. It's a bit edgy for that moment, but it gets the job done, and when the backing track returns, it's quite wonderful. Carry on to the transition.

Sail-Synthetic Sound System Remix

This one begins with a top heavy kick, and some electro-elements. The soaring work of before is introduced, rather subtly, until a cliffhanger drops us into a minor break. We return with a gritty track; some of the filling percussion makes a cameo here, but the stage is taken by those electro elements...Until the melody returns. It is built up by some clickwork, and a bending bassline, until we return to the groove. The melody sweeps in and out as we exit the track.

Again, a nice little release. It's nice when these little things turn out to be really really big gems...I'll give this one an 8.5/10 (Admittedly I wasn't a huge fan of the Sail remix, but I love both originals!). Hopefully we shall see more from both artist, and label, in the near-future!
